Teaching of Reading

The school has its own structured phonics schemes those being Letters and Sounds and Read Write Inc (RWI).

As a school we use Oxford Reading Tree and Project X as reading schemes. We encourage children to read  both at school and home. Children should read not just from the schemes but a variety of literature.

Considerable emphasis is placed upon children’s use and understanding of language through writing and reading. Creativity and imagination are encouraged while at the same time handwriting, spelling and overall presentation are essential elements of the English curriculum that cross into other subjects.
English is taught within the Primary Framework for Literacy.

Parent Guide to Literacy

This guide is designed to support parents at home when reading, writing and spelling with their child.  It provides a comprehensive guide to how we teach phonics at Portobello Primary.
