Mathematics

In Portobello Primary we ensure children learn and develop their Mathematical skills in environments that promote creativity, confidence, independence, and critical thinking. Our school is a place where everyone is given an education that builds on their strengths and addresses their individual needs to ensure progression. We believe that all children should be able to achieve their full potential academically, socially, emotionally and physically. We have designed a broad and balanced curriculum which is engaging, innovative and inspirational and insured an inclusive approach which recognises the needs and strengths of all our individual children.  We believe that all children can achieve in Mathematics. Therefore, teaching staff are trained to use formative assessment accurately within lessons to ensure the provision of targeted support and challenge effectively.  We organise our curriculum to provide ample opportunity for recall and to use the Mathematics taught, and to also be able to transfer and apply taught Mathematics in different contexts. We want children to make rich connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. Contributing to their cultural capital we are passionate that our children understand how Mathematics is essential to everyday life and their success in the future, and that because of our safe and nurturing environments they become confident mathematicians who are not afraid to take risks. Therefore, our aim is to give children the knowledge and skills to prepare them for what comes next in their lives. This includes the relevant vocabulary needed throughout their education and the opportunity to link Mathematics to real-world problem solving.  This learning contributes to healthy well-being by developing an independent learner with an inquisitive mind and a keen interest in self-improvement.
