Religious Education

Religious Education

Religious Education is part of a child’s entitlement from Reception through to the end of Sixth Form. All maintained schools are required to provide Religious Education for their children and Headteachers must ensure that this is done.

Our school is a place where everyone is given an education that builds on their strengths and addresses their individual needs to ensure progression. We believe that all children should be able to achieve their full potential academically, socially, emotionally and physically. Religious Education is an essential area of learning which ensures that children are well prepared for life in a world where there are a multitude of viewpoints. We aim to nurture children’s awareness of diversity as well as sensitivity to the questions and challenges that different views and cultures can present and, in some instances, learning to appreciate the way that religious beliefs shape life and behaviour.

All local authorities are required to establish a Standing Advisory Council on Religious Education [SACRE] to provide advice to the local authority and to periodically review the Locally Agreed Syllabus.

The agreed syllabus must reflect that the religious traditions in Great Britain are principally Christian. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of Religious Education.

At Portobello Primary School we focus on the following religions in line with the Gateshead Locally Agreed Syllabus (2018):

  • Christianity – *Studied across all year groups.
  • Judaism
  • Hinduism
  • Islam
